3 December International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 with the resolution 47/3 of the United Nations General Assembly. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and society, and to raise awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopted in 2006, a product of the UN's long-standing work in the field of disability, promotes the development of the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action. The Charter has contributed to the implementation of other international development commitments, such as the New Urban Agenda and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development.
Empowering people with disabilities and promoting inclusion and equality
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development focuses on empowering people with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda promises to “leave no one behind”. As both beneficiaries and agents of change, persons with disabilities can fast-track the process towards inclusive and sustainable development and support a resilient society for all, including in the context of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian action and urban development. Governments, persons with disabilities and their representative organisations, academic institutions and the private sector need to work as a “team” for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
